The Victor Talking Machine Company began using the Western Electric Hi Fidelity Sound System commercially in early 1925. Paul Whiteman, Victor's premier popular orchestra, began recording with the microphone on May 5, 1925. Herein are 10 representitive recordings from mid 1925 that demonstrate the Whiteman sound in its full "Orthophonic" glory.

I have used some audio restoration software to enhance the listening experience of these recordings which were made more than 85 years ago. Enjoy.

I'm delighted that you enjoyed these recordings. I can't say enough about the Paul Whiteman Orchestra during the 1920's. He managed to stuff more music into 3 minutes worth of recording time than most bands of this era save for Ellington and Henderson.

The sound you have brought back on these is terrific--I've been selecting songs from this archive for over two years, but have just discovered your work. What a joy for a non-techie like me!!

Very good recordings; I have not heard ANY of these before and I've listened to a lot of Paul Whiteman!
Appears to be Billy Murry on the vocal in Footloose, long after his hayday.

Thanks for uploading these.

(Of special interest to Marx Brothers fans will be the last of the group, Monkey Doodle Doo, from their stage musical 'The Coconuts' which was eventually made into their first major release sound film a few short years later.)
